When applying to college can you be accepted to the school but denied to the department major?

I just applied to some colleges that I am interested in and some required a separate application for my major ( landscape architecture). My question is can you be accepted to the University but denied to the department, at which point you could change your major. OR If you are denied by the department are you automatically denied to the University?

  1. thats called change ur major, easy, just say u didnt like it and u want to explore more and stuff. sure...100% i m positive..actually its a better way to get into tougher schools ^^ my tips
  2. Yes
  3. Yes, you can be, particularly if the major is particularly prestigious or has additional entrance requirements. If this were to happen and you did well in your core subjects during the first year in college, you could reapply. Good luck!
  4. yes, you can be denied into the major but accepted into the university if the major has different requirements than the university. For example, you can be accepted into a UC but that doesn't mean that you will be accepted into the psychology department if you fail to meet their requirements. I suggest looking at the requirements for the major and making sure that you have fulfilled all of them (or will fulfill them) before you enter the school. If in doubt, contact the department and ask.
  5. I've actually never heard of a person applying to the particular school until after at least the freshman year. Usually you just apply to the school and get some of your prerequisites, this shows the school that you're a good student by their standards. You can change your major whenever you want to.
  6. yes its possible... but the good news is that, there is a possibility that when you get into the department you're accepted to, if you do very well, you can transfer to your desired department
