what to put in my portfolio for a photographer position?

im applying for a photographer position at a local studio. they do wedding, children/family, and senior photography. the position is mostly for children section. anyways, they want a portfolio of some photos and i was wondering what should i use. most of my experience has been with nature, architecture, landscape... basically not people. BUT back in high school i took a lot of my friends pictures senior year and also group/club/sport pictures for yearbook. i was thinking to use my friends headshot/portraits.. but the studio is in a small town and my friends who i took photos of are black and im wondering if they might be racist. i guess the only thing i can do is send them, i just dont want to get questioned about it by some racist woman in an interview and i dont know how to react if something like that would happen in that situation. any help with this specific question or anything else dealing with photography would be helpful, thanks. Thanks KK. I was thinking about that, but then again, i would be photographing children/families, so i wasnt sure if they would really want to see my other stuff. i will probably mix it up to show versatility.

  1. Here's an idea: Mix it up. Put a few shots in of your friends to highlight your people photography skills but then also put in the nature, landscape and architecture shots to highlight versatility and diversity. The more it shows you can shoot the better off you are. They want to see and know you are not limited to one subject only as they may want you to branch out. Good luck!
  2. Mixing it up is a great idea. Also, who says you need to send in existing photographs? Go to the park, the beach, a school, anywhere and take some new portraits. If you want people to pose instead of taking candids, offer "free photos" and get their addresses. Send 'em a copy when you print everything.
