In your opinion what looks better old architecture or modern???

Personally I think that architecture from the 18th to 19th centuries looks much better than architecture today this is because it actually looks designed, where as I think that modern architecture looks sterile, cold and all the same. But what is your opinon?

  1. Old. I like all old things though. I restore Victorian homes for a living so I may be a bit bias.
  2. I like aspects of both.
  3. Definitely older styles. modern stuff is too sore on your eyes, all jaggy angles and glass
  4. old most definately.
  5. Totally agree with you, I quite like the Gothic era.
  6. old
  7. Architecture is more detailed and complex. And modern is clean and fresh. I like both :)
  8. old every time, even though my boyfriend is an architect the buildings that make me gasp or at least say wow are all old. houses i love Victorian and Edwardian, and 18th - 19th century public buildings i think look the best x
  9. Depends. The old stuff is more cosy and warming, so my house so my house would be architecture. But for public buildings Iprefer the modern stuff.
  10. depends, I've seen bad examples of old architecture and bad examples of modern architecture. Architecture is the same as anything else, you can't say every single piece of music made in 18th century was crap and every single piece of music made in the 20th century was good, mainly because it's a matter of taste and also because there will always be people who just have more talent than others...
  11. i prefer modern, it can be unbelieveable......... old architecture is amazing and adorning, but it just depends on what you are comparing to what.... their is a lot of crap buildings and houses around of both times.
  12. I agree. I like the old farm houses, the old barns, and I like old cars. Whyt can't they build a nice light car that looks like they did in the 30s. Those were the days my friend. We'd thought they'd never end. We'd sing dance --- sorry. Got carried away.
  13. Obviously there is a place for both. Both are the result of study, design and flair and carry the ideas of the present into the future. Pugin can be respected for his scholarship and industry just as the design of the ' Wobbly Bridge' excited interest and curiosity.
  14. I like an architecture that fits the context in which it is placed. What I mean by that... if you are in the mountains a nice Swiss chalet will fit well in the place. Now, if you are in Florida, a Swiss chalet is totally out of place. I agree with you that most of our modern buildings tend to look sterile and cold. On the other hand, it really doesn't have to be that way. Have you ever seen the Guggenheim museum in NY? It was designed in the late 1950's, or the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao, Spain designed in 1997? So just remember -- when you are designing a new building (or if you know someone that is designing a new building) look around and study the site. Your new structure must respond to the time and the surroundings where it is being placed. If you do that, I am sure that you will be very close to having a building that will be beautiful.
